Cloud cover brings down mercury

Mumbai saw some respite from the sweltering heat on Wednesday as clouds covered the city skies and brought down the temperature by a degree.

The clouding was a result of the cyclonic storm Laila near Vishakapatnam in the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department officials said, adding that the chances of light rains and sporadic drizzles can’t be ruled out.

K Satidevi, director,IMD,Mumbai, said,“Though the cyclonic storm is very far from Mumbai, the loosened clouds are extending till here. The storm is an intense system and is also causing moisture incursion here. Light rains are possible till the system clears.”

On Wednesday, the maximum temperature in Santacruz dipped from 35.5°C at 8.30 am to 33°C at 5.30 pm. In Colaba,it recorded 34.9 °C in the morning and 34.8°C in the evening.

Meanwhile,Satidevi said that there was just a minute chance for the cyclonic system to affect the state’s monsoon. “While such system formations do disturb the atmosphere,it is not necessary that it upsets the entire monsoon here. We are just in the middle of May and monsoon sets in Mumbai only by June 10. The conditions are bound to improve by then,” she said.
