The Mumbai Police Crime Branch have detained three persons, including a Mumbra-based builder, for the murder of mosque trustee Akhtar Hussain Ansari at Dockyard Road last month. According to the police, the murder was a contract killing motivated by a property dispute between the deceased and the builder.
The detained suspects have been identified as builder Mohammed Faruq Sheikh,Ramzan Sheikh and Mohammed Hussain alias Nanhe. They will be handed over to the Byculla police, who will produce them in court on Friday to seek custody.
Our investigations have revealed that this is a contract killing. The contract amount was paid by Faruq. In 2006,Faruq met Ansari when the latter approached him for development of a 9,000-sq-ft property at Qadar Palace in Kausa,Mumbra. Faruq claims they settled on an agreement for development of half the area. It was decided that Ansari would get 30 per cent of the developed area and Faruq would get the remaining. Upon completion of construction,Ansari got seven rooms which he gave out on a monthly rent of Rs 2,000 each, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy.
In an unverified claim,Faruq told us that later Ansari approached him for developing the remaining 4,500 sq ft and the construction began after an oral agreement between the two. As per the agreement,Ansari was to receive 26 per cent of the area. Faruq claimed he insisted on a written agreement, however, after three storeys were constructed,Ansari demanded 30 per cent area. He also threatened to complain to the municipal corporation that his land had been encroached. Angered by this,Faruq decided to get Ansari killed, said Roy.
As per the Crime Branch,Faruq approached Ramzan,a labour contractor, who in turn roped in Nanhe,a hardened criminal with cases of murder, illegal arms possession and robbery against him in Uttar Pradesh. Nanhe recruited an associate who shot Ansari. Faruq also prepared a fake sale deed and forged Ansaris signature.
Faruq paid Ramzan Rs 3.2 lakh,of which Nanhe claims to have received Rs 1.4 lakh. We are looking for Nanhes accomplice who shot Ansari, said Roy. According to the police,Faruqs younger brother Isakh Siddiqui had shot dead a man at the behest of the Dawood Ibrahim gang in the Manish Market area in 1998. He has been an active member of the gang in Pakistan since then.
