Rain damages roads, MC claims not enough funds for repair

The lack of funds has often been cited by MC officials and Mayor H S Gohalwaria in public functions.

The untimely rain not only caused huge damage to crops but also made the condition of city roads worse.

Significantly, though the MC had earmarked Rs 30 crore for making new roads in 2014-15, they could spend only Rs 6.29 crore because of fund crunch. Further, while the corporation had earmarked Rs 55 crore for repair of roads,  the records show that they could spend Rs 44 crore on maintenance.

For the next financial year, however, the corporation has brought down its budget for making new roads to Rs 23 crore while for repair work to Rs 52 crore. “As they never spend even half of the funds on making roads, so what is the point in raising the figure every year?” asked BJP councillor Inder Malhotra.

The lack of funds has often been cited by MC officials and Mayor H S Gohalwaria in public functions.

The extremely bad roads can be see in posh areas: Model Town, Model Town Extension, Pakhowal Road, Dugri, and BRS Nagar.
Roads in industrial areas are already in bad shape.

SAD councillor Jagbir Singh Sokhi, however, said, “Tax collection is not up to the mark, so MC is short of funds. A number of chronic defaulters are not paying taxes which is taking a toll on the development of the city.”

In the forthcoming meeting, apart from Congress, even BJP councillors would be asking the mayor about his plans for development of the city, sources said.
