Despite the orders issued by deputy commissioner regarding the closure of schools till January 8 in view of the prevailing cold weather,a few schools remained open today.

In Sacred Heart Convent School,Sarabha Nagar,students went to the school on Monday and were told that school would remain closed for two days only while BCM Arya Senior Secondary School principal,Paramjit Kaur maintained that they came to know about the DC’s orders on Monday morning when the students had already arrived in the schools adding that from tomorrow onwards they would keep the schools closed.

However,the students in the school have not been intimated about the same and sources revealed that students had been told to come half an hour late from January 6 onwards. Tomorrow,the schools will remain closed on account of Gurpurb.District education officer Bachittar Singh however maintained that schools will remain closed from tomorrow onwards. DC Vikas Garg was not available for his comment.

ZP passes budget worth 86 crore
Zila Parishad has passed a budget worth more than Rs 86 crore for the year 2010-11 of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) for Ludhiana district. Out of this amount,around Rs 51 crore will be spent on labour and Rs 34 crore on material. This was disclosed by Manpreet Singh Ayali,Chairman,Zila Parishad,while presiding a special meeting for passing the budget of NREGA at Zila Parishad complex on Monday.

MC drives leaves poor in lurch
The Tehbazari team of the MC in order to clear encroachments from the city,on Monday targetted the jhuggis outside Rarewala market near bus stand. About 12 jhuggis were demolished rendering many families along with many children homeless in cold weather. The MC team had demolished jhuggis at least thrice in the past three months at the same location only to see them springing up again. The dwellers however protested saying that the authorities targetted only poor and were sparing the rod to the big encroachers.

Inqlabi Kendra makes a case for migrants
A few associations under the banner of Inqlabi Kendra on Monday staged a rally inside Mini Secretariat office protesting against the administration and police failure in the Dhandari Kalan clash episode. The members alleged that the migrants had not been meted out justice with more than 100 migrants still lodged in jails for no fault of their. Members of the Pendu Mazdoor Union and Bharti Kisan Union and a few other organisations staged a rally and also gave a memorandum to the DC.

Last date for applications extended
The PAU Director of Extension Education,Dr MS Gill on Monday said that two Chief Minister awards in agriculture and horticulture would be given to outstanding farmers,who have made contributions for innovative farming during the Kisan Mela to be held at PAU in March. The Chief Minister award in agriculture,carrying a cash prize of Rs 25,000 along with a plaque and a citation,will be given to self-cultivating farmers of field crops. Dr Gill said that the last date for applying for the awards has been extended to January 11. Earlier,the last date was December 21. The farmers can obtain the prescribed proforma from the Directorate of Extension Education or from the office of Krishi Vigyan Kendras,Farm Advisory Service Scheme,Chief Agriculture Officers or Deputy Directors (Horticulture) of all districts,said Dr Gill.

Dr Kang to be honoured
The PAU Vice-Chancellor,Dr Manjit Singh Kang has been chosen by the Amity University for the ‘Amity academic excellence award’ in recognition to his contributions,distinct vision,innovation,competitiveness and sustenance. In his communication,Dr Gurinder Singh,Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Amity University said that the award would be conferred on Dr Kang during the International Business Summit (INBUSH) -2010 being organised on February 24-26 in Noida by the Amity International Business School and Amity Global Business School. Dr Singh said that the summit would be on the theme ‘Inspiring,involving and integrating individuals for creating world class innovative organizations’.

CoA alumni meet on Feb 11-12
The annual meet of the alumni of College of Agriculture (COA) of PAU will be held from February 11 to 12. Giving details,the Dean of COA,Dr Milkha Singh Aulakh said that alumni of the college from Faislabad,Pakistan,will be invited to participate. He said that special technical sessions would be organized on the occasion. He said that a special lecture on food security scenario will be delivered by the World Food Prize Winner,Dr Gurdev Singh Khush and that the alumni making significant strides in different fields would be honoured. They will include Dr Jai Rup Singh,Dr K.R Dhiman,Dr Arvind Bakshi and Dr S.S. Chahal who became vice-chancellors of different Universities and Dr Gurbachan Singh who joined as agricultural commissioner,Govt. of India.
