PRELIMINARY investigation into the deaths of two policemen who were allegedly shot by an undertrial while he was being escorted to Allahabad on a train after appearing at a Jaunpur court has revealed that the criminal had used the cellphones of the constables to plan his escape.
The deceased, constables Dharmendra Singh and Hare Ram Yadav, were escorting Neeraj Singh from Jaunpur on an Allahabad-bound passenger train. The incident took place near Bariya Rampur station in Phoolpur late on Tuesday evening.
Neeraj, who fled after shooting the constables, had used their mobile phones to contact his gang members, said sources in the railway police after they analysed the call records of the two cellphones.
Also,Neeraj used one of the cellphones to make an extortion call to a Jaunpur-based businessman,Kamlesh Mishra, from whom he demanded Rs 5 lakh.
There are some loose ends in the meticulously planned attack. We are also probing how Neeraj had made the extortion call while being in police custody, said SP (Railway) B B Singh.
Though Singh refused to comment on the call details retrieved from the mobile phones of the constables, sources said that Neeraj used the cellphone of Dharmendra to make about a dozen calls to people in Jaunpur and Kolkata. The last call he had made was at 7.10 pm on Tuesday to a person in Kolkata.
He also received a call on this particular mobile phone at 7.12 pm.
Some phone numbers in the dialled and received lists of the cellphones are now switched off.
Police believe that these numbers belong to Neerajs gang members who killed the constables and freed him.
A history-sheeter,Neeraj belongs to Munna Bajrangi gang and has 28 cases of heinous crime, including extortion, murder, attempt to murder and kidnapping in Jaunpur, registered against him.
