There can hardly be a better visibility for a little known graphics company than the wall behind the Check-In area of the new Domestic Terminal 1 D at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. So when advertising executive Pinaki Ranjan Saha,40,proprietor of Hub Kreatives won the bid for contributing designs for 1D,he was quick to seize the opportunity.
I was given an open brief from GMR-DIAL (the architects and contractors for Delhi airport). But since Delhi is the capital, the designs should symbolise the rich heritage and diversity of the city, says Saha.
His team of copywriters and artists have come up with vinyl wall graphics for the glass walls on either side of the check-in area,on the theme Delhi skyline, and for the entrance corridor to the VIP lounge, the theme is History wall.
The check-in area depicts images of the Qutab Minar and Red Fort,in-between skyscrapers and graphics illustrations, while the other depicts the Lotus Temple and India Gate.
The lounge corridor documents the journey of Delhi, from Indraprastha city in ancient times to Lal Kot,Siri Fort,Tuqlaqabad,Jahanpanah,Firuzabad,Dilli Sher Shahi,Shahjahanabad to the present day, cosmopolitan ,Delhi.
Apart from this, the Terminal also displays the branding, which was done by another firm,Leo Burnett,on the theme A New Delhi Everyday. The theme comprises drop down banners highlighting the diverse nature of the city. We have put across a unique mixture of tradition and modernity to reflect the ever changing spirit of Delhi, says Arun Arora,AVP,Corporate Communications,GMR DIAL.
Sahas team of Reeshabh Pradhan,28 and Saumendu Bikas Mahata,31,have worked on brands like Revlon and Religare, vastly different from Delhi Airport.
We carried out a survey to analyse how well people know Delhi. Surprisingly nobody knew anything about the citys significant role in the freedom struggle, explains Pradhan, the copy writer who conceptualised the theme for the wall graphics and the Lounge corridor.
So the trio hired the expertise of GMR-DIALs photographer,Rakesh Sahai,to capture monuments like Red Fort,Humayuns tomb,Old Fort,in different styles as per the brief,of capturing Delhis history. We wanted soft images and different camera angles that brought to life the character of the monuments, says Saha, who started Hub Kreatives three years ago after spending 12-years in advertising. After the pictures were clicked,Mahata got to work.
The idea was make a powerful statement with the picture of a great Delhi monument, says Mahata, senior art director.
The team installed the History wall last month, while completing the most challenging phase, the Delhi skyline theme.
We had never designed such a large canvas before, says Saha.
We selected four iconic images from Delhis history and merged them with the cityscape of high rise apartments, he adds. The translucent vinyl sheet of the Skyline theme changes colour, from a light crimson shade depicting sunrise,to a sea blue colour as the day progresses. Checking in was never this colourful.
