A history-sheeter,arrested by the Bareilly police on Wednesday, has turned out to be a terror suspect following the recovery of certain dubious materials from his possession.
Batteries and wires attached to small iron pipes, two packets containing black and white odourless powders and pamphlets containing anti-India material and references to Bangladesh-based terror outfit HuJI have been found on Chand Mohammad arrested by the Izzat Nagar police following a tip-off.
He is a history-sheeter of Prem Nagar police station.
The Bareilly police have sent an alert to the DGP Headquarters and the Anti-Terror Squad regarding the incident.
The ADG (Law and Order),Brij Lal,said the pipes connected with batteries and wires appeared to be meant for use in improvised explosive devices. The police will seek Mohammads remand for his extensive interrogation,as he is yet to reveal the places he had visited when he was on the run.
It appears that the man had terror links, Lal said. The powders seized from Mohammad had been sent to the forensic lab for tests.
Anti-terror Squad DIG Rajiv Krishna, however, said: Officials have been interrogating him since morning, but his links with any terror outfit or involvement in subversive activities is yet to be verified. The call details of the mobile phones used by him are also being scanned.
Bareilly SP (City) Rakesh Jolly said Mohammad had landed in the police net when a Special Operation Group team was looking for suspects involved in a murder that had taken place in the city in September. The name of Mohammad and his associates had figured during investigation. The team traced Mohammads whereabouts by keeping a track on the phones of his aides,Jolly said.
He added that the accused will be produced before the court on Friday and an application seeking his custody will also be submitted.
