With the Kanwar Yatra coming to a close on Friday (Shivratri), the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has gone out of its way for the lakhs of devotees who walked on the 198-km Delhi-Dehradun highway since the beginning of the yatra on July 22.

Earlier, meat shops were directed to be closed during the course of the yatra and restaurants serving food were directed not to serve devotees with curry, dals and other items containing onion or garlic to “maintain purity of food”.

The yatra this year hit the headlines following the UP government’s direction to all restaurants and roadside eateries on the route to display names of their owners.

The order was enforced in Meerut, Ghaziabad, Saharanpur,Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts. The order was challenged in the Supreme Court through a petition and the apex court directed that following the government’s order was not mandatory for the eatery owners.  Kanwariyas allegedly vandalised some restaurants in Muzaffarnagar, Shamli and Ghaziabad districts for allegedly using onion and garlic in food.
