Alert neighbours help nab ‘murderers’

Habibul Hassan,Additional SP(Trans-Gomti),said the accused — Tanveer and Surendra alias Himanshu — both residents of Daliganj,came to Mahira’s house on a motorcycle and had an argument with her,following which they slit her throat as well as Rekha’s.

Hassan said prima facie it appears that Mahira’s illicit relationship with the accused led to the killings. He said the accused were under the influence of alcohol at the time of incident and while Mahira wanted them to leave,they insisted on staying,and this led to the argument.

Hassan said as the accused were trying to dispose the bodies when children playing outside noticed the blood flowing in the drain outside and alerted the neighbours who promptly locked the house from outside and informed the police. He said both the accused were taken into the custody and were being questioned. Rekha’s body was found in the washroom on the first floor and Mahira’s in the room on the ground floor of the house,he said.

According to Hassan,Mahira’s husband Anil,who is a sanitation worker at King George Medical University,had rented the house four months back for her as he has another wife who lives at his ancestral house in Hassanganj area. Anil said he had gone to his house in Hassanganj at the time of incident and when he returned,he found the crowd outside his house. Police said Rekha’s husband Suresh Tiwari is a truck driver.

Hassan said the accused are currently unemployed. The police found two buttons’ of Surendra’s shirt from the washroom where the body of Rekha was found. The knife used to murders the two women has also been recovered,they said.
