Newly appointed Congress zonal presidents and 31 district and city presidents were today given a deadline of June 10 to complete reorganisation work up to the grassroots level so that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi can begin a tour of the state.
During Assembly polls,Rahul had promised to regularly tour UP even if his party did not come to power. However,it has been over a year now and his tours are still awaited.
Sources said leaders were told by state Congress president Nirmal Khatri at a meeting today that it is important that they complete reorganisation work soon. The outgoing team of zonal presidents, which included Union ministers, members of Parliament as well as MLAs,could not complete the task of reorganisation in seven months and were thus replaced recently.
The new team was also asked to take up fortnightly protests against the state government on issues of power crisis, poor law and order, wheat procurement and other local issues at the district level.
The team was also informed about the system of three-tier monitoring evolved by the party high command, where review meetings of state work would be undertaken once every two months by Rahul in Delhi, then review meetings would be held once every fortnight by zonal and state presidents.
Our seven months have been wasted. Thus,we would have to start our activities afresh and at a fast pace, said a senior party leader.
We were told that the organisation is bigger than any individual and since we all have been chosen for the work done by us rather than working for any individual leader,we should work for the organisation, said a city unit president.
