Why Partha got Didi stick: No investment in last 18 months

L & LR department confirmed not receiving any requisition for land; Partha-headed IT dept’s performance too not at par

It seems there’s more to it than meets the eye in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s reprimand to senior Trinamool Congress leader and minister Partha Chatterjee during a review meeting of all the departments recently.

In the meeting,Mamata took Partha to task for the non-performance of the information technology department, headed by the minister. However,a reality check with the land and land reforms (L & LR) department revealed that Mamata’s anger could have been because the department of commerce and industries,Partha’s principal portfolio, which has failed miserably in getting industries for the state.

According to officials of the L & LR department, the last proposal for requirement for land came 18 months back, for setting up an industrial park at Raghunathpur in Purulia district. The proposal for setting up the park on 1897.44 acres came from West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC),the nodal agency for requisitioning land and handing it over to the manufacturers concerned .

The officials further said that no other proposal has come till date despite the department having a sizeable land bank.

“We have a land bank now though it is not yet complete. But we can provide land, provided proposals come. But where are those proposals?’’ an official of the L & LR department told The Indian

Express.

The Trinamool Congress government has already created a policy, which states that the state government will not acquire land for private companies. The entrepreneurs will have to approach the WBIDC,which will send the project report to the L & LR department requisitioning land.

The Raghunathpur Industrial park, located 255 kms away from Kolkata, will come up with an investment of Rs 17,093 crore.

The park will mainly have a steel project of Jai Balaji Group offering 10,175 direct employment.

While Partha Chatterjee was not available for comment,Abhiroop Sarker, former chairman of WBIDC and now a member, said he cannot say anything regarding WBIDC.
