Fusion band Mrigya is ready with their first album

After a decade of live performances across the world,Delhi based contemporary fusion band Mrigya is all set to launch their debut album titled Mrigya 2010: Composition of World Harmony (Virgin Records).

For a band that started playing in late 90’s—a time when the underground music scene existed only in bits and spurts but has taken off since, the album appears slightly too late. “Indeed it is late but somehow we were never keen on a record deal. We were a bunch of six college friends playing live and just enjoying our music even when Delhi’s clubbing circuit meant Bollywood remixes. But bands younger than us were cutting albums. So when we got this offer,we thought why not,” says Indraneel Hariharan, the band’s bassist.

The band with Sharat Srivastava on the violin,Gyan Singh on Indian percussion,Rajat Kakkar on drums,Sachin Kapoor on guitars and Indraneel Hariharan on bass guitars has been known for their interesting blend of jazz, rock, funk,Indian classical and carnatic music. Comprising seven of their most popular tracks over the last 10 years, the album holds few surprises. “We have a CD of brand new tracks that we’ll release by the end of the year,” says Srivastava whose violin forms a strong base for the album.

The album was recorded at Soultax Studios in Dwarka and mastered in London, opens with a pure instrumental track titled Ganga followed by a qawwali sung to verse by Khusro. The album ends with a track called Rock the Raag,an instrumental piece that mixes jazz and funk.
