The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing in the case relating to the land acquisition at Singur, which came up before a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan. Advocate M P Raju, counsel of one of the petitioners, said the apex court will hear the case in August and will go into the merit of the case.
Raju argued in the Supreme Court that the West Bengal government acquired 997 acres for setting up Tatas small car project in violation of legal provisions of the Land Acquisition Act,1894. The hearing continued for 20 minute before the three-member Bench comprising the CJI,Justices Deepak Verma and B S Chauhan.
Dismissing the petitions in January 2008,the Calcutta High Court had held that the land acquisition at Singur by the state government was not illegal. Following this, petitioners had filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court verdict.
