New formats do little to infuse life into reality shows with faces we have seen several times over

All thanks to a monster that seems to h ave consumed Indian television reality shows. Rakhi Sawant owes more to reality shows than to jejus for helping her challenge English grammar,make-up and sanity as understood by an average mortal. But if her opinions on the significance of silicon implants had enlightened us on a dance show,her incredible spoken English had entertained in another,and we are more thankful than interested when she dances these days probably because thats the only time she shuts up and blame it on the reality show overkill,that we have stopped gawking at the wonder that she is. A problem that is probably on the verge of spelling nemesis for the reality show boom on Indian TV.

We more or less see the same TV celebrities repeated in these shows. Theres no fun in seeing them anymore because we are mostly aware of their onscreen antics, says Ishani Dasgupta,who works with a publishing house. NDTV Imagines latest show Desi Girls is a case in point. While it does have some new faces,not over exploited on TV,it has some reality show fixtures too like Kashmira Shah and Monica Bedi who had been on dance shows and Bigg Boss respectively.

We have seen them so many times,that whatever they do now,we cant be fooled into believing that it is for real. Everything looks so orchestrated, says Nirmalya Majumder,a short film-maker.

Also,the fact that actors from short-lived TV soaps these days dont have the kind of recall value K-serial stars had a few years back probably lead the reality show makers to rope in the faces they consider bankable. Quite understandable,because TV is over populated with soaps these days. People hardly invest that much attention on individual characters on TV shows like before. No wonder the reality shows repeat the same people, says Srijan Roychaudhuri,an employee with an investment firm.
