Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has asked her party leaders to launch a massive propaganda for holding early elections. Since the December 11 deadline is over, the party is all set to gear up to press for elections – which is due in May – by February 2011.
With her instruction a team of Trinamool MPs – led by Union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy – met Chief Election Commissioner S Y Qureshi in Delhi yesterday.
At any point of time the election can be announced. We have requested the Election Commission to bring out a faultless electoral roll so that a free and fair election can take place, Roy said.
Early elections has been demanded by Banerjee since the Left setback in the Lok Sabha election. But the ruling Left Front refused to hold elections earlier. They have categorically said that state Assembly election will take place in due time. In view of LF apathy in holding early elections Banerjee urged the EC to announce election date on its own – six months prior to the expiry of the Legislative Assembly.
Trinamool sources said,Banerjee has already discussed the issue of early elections with her ally Congress. A section of Congress leaders also feel that the government has lost all credibility to govern and a fresh mandate is required for the benefit of the state.
Majority of the Congress leaders in the state also acknowledged our view over early election. We feel the demand for an early election will take a serious turn in the next few days, said a senior party leader.
