Three persons,two of them employees of a renowned private hospital near Phulbagan,were arrested on Saturday night for their alleged involvement in the kidney transplant racket unearthed last week.
The accused Pradip Mondal (32),Prabuddha Bhattacharjee and Sandipan Das were produced before a court and later remanded in police custody till February 16.
Later in the day,the accused were brought to Lalbazar for interrogation. The case is being investigated by the Special Cell of the Kolkata police Detective Department.
We are presently interrogating the arrested accused, said Jawed Shamim,Deputy Commissioner of Police,Detective Department.
An officer of the department said Mondal,a resident of Baruipur,used to work as an agent for the kingpin of the racket,who is said to reside in New Delhi. Bhattacharjee and Das,residents of Beliaghata and Sonarpur,used to arrange for the medical test of kidney donors at the private hospital.
The accused were rounded up from their respective residences after their involvement in the racket was disclosed by their associates arrested earlier,said the officer.
The police suspect that some city-based doctors could have also been involved in the racket.
We are inquiring whether any other staff of the hospital is involved in the racket,having a link with the other states. Some women are also involved in the racket, the officer added. Earlier Kolkata police arrested Hriday Dubey,Mithun Chatterjee and Chandana Mukherjee from Phulbagan and Thakurpukur in connection with the racket.
