JU takes back 3 rusticated for ragging

Jadavpur University has decided to allow three students who were rusticated over a ragging incident to continue their studies again.

The university has revoked the expulsion order taking into account their financial condition,and the fact that the students have already received punishment for two years, said Siddhartha Datta,the Pro-Vice Chancellor.

Datta said the decision was taken recently by the executive council and pointed out that by the time the students would be readmitted,they would have lost two years.

On September 4,2009,the students were found guilty of ragging first year students in the universitys main hostel. On September 15,the anti-ragging committee had recommended their expulsion.

Of the three students,two were from Mechanical Engineering and one was in Physics department. Since they were not given transfer certificates,they could not get into other institutions too.

The representatives of the university said even in criminal courts,people serving life sentences are released on grounds of good behaviour.

After repeated requests from their parents,the university formed a committee to re-evaluate their case, said Partha Pratim Biswas,a senior teacher and an executive council member.

According to Biswas,the students come from very average families and one of them is also physically challenged. They,however,will not be allowed to stay in any of the university hostels.
