Girls again outshone boys in the ICSE and ISC examinations, the results of which were declared on Wednesday. Not only did the girls register a better pass percentage, they outperformed boys cornering more Grade-I (90 per cent or above) in all the seven subjects.
In ICSE exams, girls registered a pass percentage of 97.63 while boys managed 96.85 per cent. In the ISC examinations, girls secured a pass percentage of 98.86 compared to 96.88 per cent of boys. The overall ICSE pass percentage this year in the state is 97.99- up by 0.33 per cent from last year. The pass percentage of ISC has also improved to 97.75 compared to 96.97 per cent last year.
ISC students in the state have fared better compared to 97.08 per cent at the national level. Bengal, however, lagged behind the national pass percentage in ICSE exams, which stood at 98.05 per cent.
Some academicians attribute this to the increasing number of schools in the state and the consequent degradation in quality, while others attribute it to political factors like unrest in the Hills.
In West Bengal,22,103 students appeared for the ICSE examination from 284 schools and 16,055 students appeared for the ISC examination from 160 schools. Of 369 candidates, who have got Grade-I in each of the seven subjects in ICSE,185 are girls and 184 are boys. In ISC,61 students have secured Grade-I in each of the seven subjects,of whom 39 are girls and 22 are boys.
