Eduardo da Silva’s two excellent strikes guided Mohammedan Sporting to a convincing 2-0 victory over a depleted Calcutta Port Trust in their Calcutta Football League (CFL) Premier Division opener at home on Thursday.

The Brazilian striker broke the deadlock in the 51st minute and then doubled the lead in the 85th. Eduardo scored his first goal from a 25-yard free-kick that swerved and went into the net near the far post, leaving goalie Arindam Ghosh a spectator. His second came from a powerful right-footer from outside the box after he was nicely set up by substitute Sasthi Duley.

Port are known to be the giant killers in Kolkata football. But on the day they could barely offer any resistance to their more fancied opponent. They badly missed their two experienced central defenders,Simanta Ghosh and Kaushik Prasad. So,Md Sporting had it easy. In fact, the black-and-white brigade could have won by a bigger margin had Theodore Sunday, who looked unfit coming from a nine-month lay-off,and Jyothi Kumar not squandered sitters.

Port’s only positive chance came in the 52nd minute when Nigerian striker Ejez Henry was fouled inside the box by custodian Nasim Akhtar. But the latter made up for it by saving the penalty taken by Rajib Ekka.
