A first: Budget passed without debate in Assembly

In a first,the budget for the department of commerce and industries was passed without debate in the state Assembly,with the Opposition not placing any cut motions against it.

Trinamool Congress leaders,however,had separate take on it. “Since we were busy with the elections,we could not place cut motions,” Ashok Deb,Opposition Chief Whip,said in the Assembly.

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Partha Chatterjee,however,said later that while they had placed cut motions,the Speaker had not admitted them.

“Since one does not get receipts we cannot prove we had placed cut motions. Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim got the budget passed in that manner,” Chatterjee said.

The Speaker,however,said he had not received any cut motions. “It has never happened in the parliamentary democracy of this country that the budget on commerce and industries got cleared without debate,” Halim said
