With its complex ingredients and sheer variety of cooking styles, positioning an Indian restaurant as cool and uber,is no easy task. Punjabi By Nature introduced the vodka golgappas and Varq at The Taj came up with interestingly subtle flavours, and relied on quirky presentation to establish themselves. Now Kainoosh,a new Indian restaurant on the ground floor of the DLF Promenade Mall,Vasant Kunj, celebrates Indian cuisine in a flashy yet sophisticated setting.
The oval-shaped restaurant is an aesthetic mix of Indian and contemporary designs, with jali work on the walls and an abstract installation by Rajesh Pratap Singh adding to the aura. The golden wallpaper on the ceiling is nicely overpowering. The whole idea was to create a comfortable, easy, space, says Marut Sikka, proprietor and seasoned restaurateur, who also runs Magique at the Garden Of Five Senses.
The 90-seater eatery has a pleasant al-fresco seating option and its name,Kainoosh,is inspired by the Persian word for the emperors private dining room.
Sikka has come up with his own concoctions in the drinks menu. A cocktail made with betel leaf, gulkund and a dash of vodka makes for a fine combination with a baked, succulent Calcutta Betki with has a spicy musallam slapped over it (Rs 350). The quail (Rs 325),made with a marinade of chillies and grilled to a tender texture,is a fiery red. Tandoori Prawns (Rs 550),meanwhile,come dunked in a Goan peri peri sauce that is accented with coriander and cumin.
The menu is designed on two concepts. Either you can nibble on the starters over cocktails or opt for the thali where you can design your own platter of six dishes, four types of bread and rice. The vegetarian thali is priced at Rs 925 and the non-vegetarian platter at Rs 975.
