Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal Saturday wrote to Union Minister Amit Shah, urging the renaming of Delhi as ‘Indraprastha’, citing its ancient, cultural, and civilisational roots.

Khandelwal has also requested the renaming of Old Delhi Railway Station as ‘Indraprastha Junction’, and the International Airport as ‘Indraprastha Airport’.

“Delhi’s history is not merely thousands of years old; it is a living embodiment of Indian civilisation and the glorious legacy of the city of Indraprastha, established by the Pandavas,” Khandelwal stated.

Delhi was declared a Union Territory on November 1, 1956, under the States Reorganisation Act. On this Foundation Day, the Delhi government is also celebrating ‘Delhi Foundation Day’ at Red Fort.

Khandelwal also requested that grand statues of the Pandavas be installed at a prominent location in Delhi, as they were the founders of Delhi and named it Indraprastha, their capital city.

In his communications, Khandelwal has reached out not only to Union Home Minister Amit Shah but also to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, and Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

He highlighted that history shows that the Pandavas established their capital, Indraprastha, on the banks of the Yamuna, making it one of the most prosperous, beautiful, and well-organised cities during the Mahabharata era.

“It was here that governance was founded on dharma (righteousness), justice, and public welfare,” he said.

The MP also emphasised that “Delhi is not just a modern metropolis, it is the soul of Indian civilisation, and its true name, Indraprastha, symbolises our historical identity, cultural heritage, and glorious tradition.”

Khandelwal also said that just as India’s ancient cities such as Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Ujjain, and Varanasi have reconnected with their original heritage, “Delhi too must be honoured by restoring its ancient identity as Indraprastha. This transformation would not only represent historical justice, but also a significant step toward a cultural renaissance.”

He further stated that renaming Delhi would restore history and rekindle cultural pride. Khandelwal asserted, “This demand aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of cultural resurgence, under which India is reviving the ancient identities of its sacred cities Ayodhya, Kashi, and Prayagraj, and Delhi, the capital of India, should not be left behind.”

Khandelwal said that erecting statues of the Pandavas on the sacred land of Indraprastha would revive the spirit of India’s history, culture, and faith. “The Pandavas are eternal symbols of righteousness, courage, sacrifice, and justice — values that will inspire future generations and strengthen India’s moral foundation,” he asserted.

He said Delhi is not just a modern capital; it is the living heritage of that great city of the Mahabharata era — Indraprastha — where righteous governance first took root. “The time has come to restore to our capital its original name and identity,” Khandelwal stated.
