A law student on Wednesday approached the Delhi High Court with a PIL seeking removal of encroachments outside the Dwarka Sector-13 Metro station, and creation of disabled-friendly access to the Metro station for safe and convenient passage of the public.
Claiming that the footpath outside the Metro station had been taken over by an automobile dealer who had been allotted commercial space inside the Metro station, the plea filed by Dwarka resident Ebbani Aggarwal says the DMRC and the South Municipal Corporation have failed in their constitutional obligation.
During arguments before the court of Acting Chief Justice BD Ahmad and Justice Vibhu Bakhru,Aggarwal said the free movement of pedestrians was obstructed due to the vehicles parked by the automobile dealership, which created a public nuisance.
The plea also stated that the DMRC had failed to provide basic facilities such as wheelchair slopes for disabled commuters at the Sector-13 Metro station.
The DMRC has omitted to discharge its constitutional and statutory duties and obligations towards persons with disabilities, alleges the plea, asking for directions to the DMRC and South corporation to provide safe passage for the public.
The plea also asked for directions to the DMRC prohibiting the Director,DMRC from allotting any commercial space for any purpose other than direct benefit and consumption of commuters.
The court disposed of the petition after the counsels for the DMRC and the South corporation assured the court that steps were already being taken to solve the issues raised in the PIL.
The court asked the DMRC and civic agency to remove encroachments expeditiously. The Traffic Police has also assured the court that appropriate action was being taken to tackle snarls in the area.
