When Mumbai-based management professional Partha Rao went on a work-related trip to the US in 2009,one of his friends introduced him to analogue photography. In an age where digital photography had already become the norm,Rao was intrigued by his friend’s film-based camera. “Until then,my experience with analogue photography was limited to my father’s SLR camera. But the Diana Mini camera, with its dreamy yellowing pictures, made me fall in love with analogue photography,” he says.

Rao quit his job to start the the India chapter of Lomography Society International (LSI) along with his photographer friend,Akshay Bhoan,in February 2011. A globally active organisation founded by Austrian students in 1992,LSI is dedicated to promoting analogue snapshot photography by manufacturing Lomography cameras. Since its India launch,it has has been drawing enthusiasts to convert them into “lomographers”

Lomography cameras come in funky bright colours. They also have several special features that enhance the photography experience and effect. For instance, colour flash gives the images a desired hue while the Sprocket Rocket gives photos the look of a film reel. Another sought-after model is the Spinner 360 degree camera, which takes a turn before clicking a panoramic shot.

The recent Lomography workshops — held in April at Attic,a fashion and lifestyle store in Mumbai — attracted writers, fashion photographers, bloggers, entreprenuers, web designers and students. Tinka Bhatia, one of the Attic partners, says,“We attract an eclectic clientèle,a lot of whom pursue creative hobbies. So it makes perfect sense to stock Lomography cameras and the workshops make for a great value addition,” she explains.

Mehtab Mann,a Delhi-based fashion photographer, who attended the workshop, says,“I own a Diana Mini. Yet,the workshop helped me learn about the Sprocket Rocket model. I am hoping my workshop experience will come in handy during my fashion shoots,” she says.

Looking at response,Rao plans to branch out to other cities. “Whenever I travel to Delhi,we try to pack in a workshop or two. We are looking out for Lomography ambassadors who will be clicking pictures for us and writing about their experiences. We should be reaching out to Delhi,Bangalore,Chennai,Kolkata and Pune this year,” he says.
