Finding parking near Kartavya Path during Republic Day and Beating Retreat celebrations just got easier. In a first, the Delhi Police, in coordination with the Ministry of Defence (MoD), has introduced a QR (Quick Response) code–based parking system covering 22 designated lots to accommodate nearly 8,000 vehicles. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D K Gupta told The Indian Express that the QR code facility will help commuters reach the parking lots closest to their designated seating enclosures. “From there, they can walk to their seats,” he added. "This will ensure that like every year, guests do not face confusion while coming to watch the Republic Day parade on January 26 and Beating Retreat ceremony on January 29.

“This will ensure that like every year, guests do not face confusion while coming to watch the Republic Day parade on January 26 and Beating Retreat ceremony on January 29. The facility provides real-time data with no human intervention,” Gupta said.

The MoD issues around 77,000 passes to spectators every year for the parade. Of these, around 8,000 passes are issued to guests to park their vehicles. The officer said that visitors who have been issued parking passes can use the QR codes pasted on them to access the parking lot listed on their tickets.

The Delhi Traffic Police on Saturday issued an advisory restricting entry of vehicles on roads leading to Kartavya Path between 6 am and 12.30 pm on January 26.

It also advised visitors to use public transport to reach Kartavya Path on January 26. While the parade will begin from 10.30 am, one would be allowed to take their seats from 7 am.

As per guidelines, the visitors must carry a valid government-issued photo ID and parade entry passes. For those arriving by vehicles, after parking at the designated lots, they may need to walk to their seats.

A similar facility will be in place for guests attending the Beating Retreat ceremony on January 29, which marks the end of Republic Day festivities.

The traffic police has also said that like in previous years, a park-and-ride facility from Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium and Connaught Place, will be available on January 26 and 29. Under this, one can park at designated areas and then take shuttle buses to reach Kartavya Path. After the event, the bus would drop the visitors back to these destinations.

The government, meanwhile, has named 23 sitting enclosures set up for Republic Day on Kartavya Path after different rivers, including Ganga, Yamuna, Gandak, Teesta, Sutlej, Ravi, Krishna, Narmada, Kosi, Kaveri, Sindhu, Godavari, Kosi and Jhelum, among others.
