Ode to Onam

Tomorrow marks Onam, the Kerala’s festival of onakkodi (new clothes),vallaamkali (snake boat races) and a whole lot of food. While it’s hard to imagine snake boats winding down the river of detritus that is the Yamuna,Delhi’s zeal for food ensures that the traditional festival feast,Onam sadya,is a delicious ready-to-eat reality. While those blessed with Mallu friends can go to their houses, others not so fortunately inclined can visit a number of the Capital’s South Indian restaurants. Vaango, the south Indian QSR (Quick Service Restaurant)is concentrating on payasam, serving two variations: Ada Payasam which is rice-based and flavoured with cardamom with an embellishment of cashew nuts and raisins; and the moong dal-based Parippu Payasam, redolent with jaggery and dried fruits. The payasams will be made available the whole day, nominally priced at Rs. 39 and 49 respectively. Those looking for a more holistic Onam meal can visit coastal restaurant Zambar which will be serving an elaborate 24-meal dish which includes several curries, rice, papadams, buttermilk and,of course, the ubiquitous banana chip, all served on a traditional banana leaf. Served between noon to four pm,the meal is priced at Rs. 595 plus taxes per person. The Sheraton’s south Indian restaurant,Dakshin, will also be serving an Onam sadya menu the whole of Monday.
