Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, set to resign from the post Tuesday, will vacate the Chief Minister’s bungalow at Civil Lines within a couple of weeks, party sources said Monday.

Kejriwal, who was arrested in connection with the Delhi excise policy case and is out on bail, announced his decision to step down at a meeting with party workers and leaders on Sunday. He said that since the trial in the case is likely to take a long time to conclude, he wanted to go to the “court of the people” to prove his innocence. “I will not sit on the CM’s seat till you vote for me again,” he said.

He lives in the Civil Lines residence with his wife, parents and children. Sources said the party wants the new CM to move in soon.

The bungalow has been the cause of much controversy, with BJP raising questions on the cost of the renovation it underwent in 2020-21 and alleging “procedural irregularities”.

Kejriwal has been living in the Flagstaff Road bungalow since 2015 when he took over as the Chief Minister for the second consecutive time.

After he was chosen as the CM in 2013, Kejriwal stayed in a Tilak Lane bungalow that he vacated after he quit the post within 49 days. After resigning, he went back to his home in Kaushambi, Ghaziabad, where he was living with his family earlier. The government accommodation was allotted to his wife, who like him was an IRS officer. She opted for voluntary retirement in 2016.

Several party functionaries, meanwhile, have offered Kejriwal a place to stay. “He is likely to stay in Delhi, and in his constituency of New Delhi. The party is looking at all options,” a party official said.

Since he is the head of a national political party, Kejriwal is also permitted a residential accommodation provided by the government. This is in case the leader has not been allotted any other government accommodation.

“Once he vacates the Civil Lines house, he will be eligible. He is yet to take a final call on whether this is an option he wants to exercise,” a party leader said.
