With his washboard abs,Milind Soman epitomised the ideal male physique during the 90s. His bare-chested act in Alisha
Chinais Made In India music video, was an inspiration for every wannabe and star to hit the gym. Years later,at 46,Soman is still considered a fitness demigod. There are faint signs of greying, but he refuses to get off the treadmill at Breathe Spa and Gym in South Extension,Part-II. The fitness studio that opened this week is a co-venture between Soman and model-turned-actor Rahul Dev. While the duo opened a gym in Neeti Bagh two years ago, this one is bigger 11,000 sq ft,which spreads across four levels and comprises a yoga center, spa, salon and fitness studio.
If Soman chipped in with the big bucks,Dev was more actively involved with the logistics and aesthetics. I literary carried these heavy pots up the stairs, says Dev,pointing to the six huge floor pots lined near the window. He discusses the thought behind the different theme rooms. The spa has metal installations in copper and aluminum that have been used to symbolise strength, says Dev,showing us a tree of life installation woven with copper wires, suspended on the reception wall. He credits the isolation work outs for the six-packs that he has managed to retain since the 90s. I should probably come out with my own fitness DVD now, chuckles Dev,who follows a 45-minute workout regimen,five-days a week.
Ironically,Soman prefers the outdoors. It feels claustrophobic inside. I prefer running outdoors, surrounded by a picturesque landscape, says the actor who regularly jogs near his bungalow in Lonavala. The gym,he explains,is to empower people with the ability to choose between a gym and outdoors. He would not recommend it though.
