Govt probes another CWG works project

The government has alleged that Sheila government indulged in fraud in preparing the estimated cost and justification of rates for project.

The AAP government on Friday ordered the Anti-Corruption Branch to investigate an alleged embezzlement worth Rs 198 crore in the construction of the Ring Road Bypass from Salimgarh Fort to Velodrome Road ahead the 2010 Games.

The government has alleged that the Sheila government indulged in fraud in preparing the estimated cost and the justification of rates for the project.

The government on Friday said the decision to have ACB investigate the project was taken on the basis of the Shunglu Committee report, which had alleged that financial lapses had occurred in the construction of the bypass.

The ACB has not registered an FIR in this case so far, government sources said.
The project was awarded to private contractors in two parts — Part-I for work on flyovers and Part-II for work on roads — at a cost of Rs 407 crore, the government statement said. It is alleged that the private contractor had inflated charges in terms of manpower and material. The loss to the government is estimated to be Rs 198 crore.

“It is necessary to investigate the matter to bring out the truth and punish the culprits in the award of Rs 407 crore for executing Phase-I and Phase-II of Ring Road Bypass from Salimgarh Fort to Velodrome Road. Accordingly, the Government of Delhi has referred the matter to the ACB for a thorough and impartial investigation and necessary action,” the statement said.

“…A loss of this magnitude could not have occurred without the knowledge, support and collusion of functionaries at the highest level of the Executive,” the statement said.
