Namrita Bachchan paints grandfather Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s legendary poem Madhushala

Attention is nothing new for Namrita Bachchan, considering her weighty surname. Her first solo exhibition in Delhi has her dwelling on the original Bachchan — grandfather Harivansh Rai — and his celebrated work Madhushala. The 33-year-old made the paintings for an illustrated coffee-table edition of the poem that was released last month. Her exhibition opened at Palette Art Gallery on Tuesday with friends and family — Priyanka Gandhi and aunt Jaya Bachchan, among others — joining in.

Namrita, daughter of Ajitabh and Ramola Bachchan, said,“The works are based on my understanding of Madhushala as a journey of life and the deep emotions of joy and sorrow that are part of it.” A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design,US,Namrita’s own book of illustrated poetry Deliverance was published in 2006. “It combines my two passions of poetry and art,” she said.

The title of each work comes from a line in the poem. If Express a proper grief for me has a women shedding tears of blood,in Lotus buds are goblets small swans swim in a pond and The girl with tinkling ornaments has a women decked with jewels. The artwork is priced at Rs 1-2 lakh each. The book,Madhushala: The House of Wine, also on sale at the gallery, comes for Rs 3,500. It has the poem in Hindi along with English translation by Marjorie Boulton and Ram Swaroop Vyas. It is interspersed with Namrita’s illustrations and has a foreword by Amitabh Bachchan.
