Republican Sena national president Anandraj Ambedkar on Tuesday met Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and extended full support to the Shiv Sena in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, scheduled to be held on January 15.

After the meeting, Shinde told reporters, “There was a positive discussion regarding providing appropriate representation to the Republican Sena.”

Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Anandraj Ambedkar-led Republican Sena had announced an alliance in July. Anandraj is the grandson of Dr BR Ambedkar and the brother of Prakash Ambedkar, who heads the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA).

The VBA has been in talks with the Congress for a possible alliance in the BMC elections, though no final decision has been taken.

According to political analysts, Shinde is trying to attract a section of Dalit voters to counter possible Marathi voter consolidation by Thackeray cousins — Uddhav of Shiv Sena UBT and Raj of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.

Shinde’s outreach to Anandraj Ambedkar is aimed at strengthening his position within the ruling MahaYuti alliance by expanding his social base.

Earlier, Prakash Ambedkar had announced an alliance with Uddhav Thackeray in 2023, but the tie-up did not materialise as seat sharing talks for the assembly polls failed.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena national spokesperson Shaina NC on Thursday held a press conference in Mumbai to respond to Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut’s demand that Deputy Chief Minister Shinde list “ten works” completed during his tenure.

“Answers are in the form of delivery, not drama,” Shaina NC said, claiming that the Shinde-led government has carried out development works that have benefited Mumbai’s Marathi residents.

Shiv Sena under Shinde remained committed to the welfare of the Marathi manoos through governance and development, she said and listed several initiatives undertaken during his tenure.
