Expansion Plans

The Delhi Metro currently has a ridership of 10 lakh passengers per day and this is expected to double by the the completion of Phase II before the Commonwealth Games.

As the Delhi Metro’s network expands and the ridership goes up rapidly,the DMRC is looking forward to increase its carrying capacity. Newsline takes a look at DMRC’s plans for the Commonwealth Games.

The Delhi Metro currently has a ridership of 10 lakh passengers per day and this is expected to double by the the completion of Phase II before the Commonwealth Games.

Metro recorded its highest ever ridership on July 26,Monday,with 12,05,898 commuters. This is the first time when Delhi Metro’s ridership has crossed the 12 lakh mark. While lines 3 and 4 recorded a total ridership of 5,88,975,line 2 recorded a ridership 3,21,889.

*The Delhi Metro has placed an additional order of 114 broad gauge coaches that will be used to increase the existing fleet from four-coach trains to six and eight-coach trains.

With this the Delhi Metro will be in a position to carry about two lakh additional commuters on Line 3 (Dwarka-NOIDA) and Line 4 (Yamuna Bank-Anand Vihar) before the Games as 12 more trains will be pressed into service on these corridors within the next two months.

Currently,Delhi Metro carries about 6,75,000 people everyday on these lines. However,with the additional trains,DMRC will be in a position to carry more than 8,70,000 commuters as the total number of trains available for services will increase to 64.

Presently 52 trains are making about 565 trips a day on these lines. DMRC will be able to increase the number of train trips to 725 everyday with the commissioning of the new trains.
