Anushree Majumdar imagines the diary of a schoolgirl at the recently concluded Jaipur Literature Festival
Dear Diary,
Sorry, I didn’t write last night because my hands and feet were paining after walking all day at the literature festival. Last week, when Principal Ma’am told us to go to Diggi Palace, I was very excited because the whole class VIII algebra test would be postponed. Ma’am told us to write a report on the festival and I thought, okay, English is my favourite subject and it has to be one page. But now I am thinking, what to write, I didn’t understand anything only!
I went with Poonam, Shilpa and Neha and we attended some sessions. Every place is so crowded, Neha was saying all of Delhi comes for the festival. I think she’s right. There were so many men and women, and everybody is always saying hi; they all know each other. I don’t think I saw anybody I know from Jaipur.
At the sessions, I tried to make notes for the report but what is classic-ism? Hegemony? Cultural revolution? Shilpa comes first in class and even she didn’t know the meanings. We tried to go to sessions where they said they’ll talk about books but after 10 minutes, everybody is talking about something else. So we walked around and could eat only one patty each because it was 60 rupees, outside it is 20 rupees. Next time, I am carrying my own tiffin.
It looked like all the students were roaming around; I saw other schools’ students also. Nobody was saying anything about the sessions apart from Pooja. She is always showing off and taking selfies with every angrez she sees, sometimes she asks for an autograph. Payaldi of class XI B told me to always ask them politely, “are you an author?” and then get an autograph because not all of them are writers or even famous. Payaldi knows because when she first came to the festival some years ago, she got an autograph from some Mr Neville Tuli. Later, she googled and found that he’s not only Indian but not even a writer.
But my best moment at the festival was when Mr Amish Tripathi had his session. I understood everything and how smartly he answered all the questions. But the best thing is that he’s writing four-five more books! He had a special session where they showed the trailer for the first book, about Lord Ram’s dynasty ka history and it was just amazing, super it was. I think I’ll write about his session only.
