269 students caught for illegal driving

Police called the parents of those who were caught and prosecuted them. It also notified schools about violations by its students.

Delhi Traffic police on Friday conducted a drive to catch minor students driving four-wheelers and two-wheelers illegally.
Police said around 269 students were caught and their parents were prosecuted. Letters were also sent to the respective schools, notifying them of the traffic violations.

According to police, officers were deployed outside private and government schools in the city at different times of the day.
When school ended, police caught students who were leaving the premises on their two-wheelers or cars.

“We have written to all Delhi schools to nominate a teacher as road safety coordinator. The letter has been forwarded to the education department. We wish to inculcate a culture of road safety in children and parents,” Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander said.

Police also sent a circular requesting schools to enrol in the Road Safety Club of the Delhi Police.

One teacher from each school enrolled is to coordinate with an ACP rank officer of the Traffic police, and be actively involved in conducting awareness programmes for students, teachers and parents, police said.

Moreover, two weeks ago, CBSE had released a notification contemplating the introduction of road safety as a subject from the academic year 2015-2016.
