Chennai weather: A flooded street in Chennai on Monday after heavy rainfall caused by cyclone Ditwah (ANI).Chennai Weather Forecast Today: Heavy rain is likely to lash parts of Tamil Nadu, including capital Chennai, on Tuesday, December 2, as well due to the influence of Cyclone Ditwah. As a result, an orange alert has been issued and schools and colleges in Chennai will remain closed. “Due to the ‘Ditwah’ cyclone and heavy rainfall warning, schools and colleges in Chennai district have been declared closed on December 2, 2025,” the district administration said in a notification.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said light to moderate rain is likely to occur at a few places over Tamil Nadu and over Puducherry, including the Karaikal area, with thunderstorm & lightning at one or two places. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tiruvallur and Chennai districts. The IMD expects 12-20 cm rain in 24 hours in these areas.

Heavy rain is also forecast over Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram and Ranipet districts.
“Squally winds with speed reaching 45-55 kmph are likely to prevail over the North Coastal & adjoining districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” an IMD bulletin read.
The IMD also warned fishermen to avoid southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and along and off Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Gulf of Mannar, Comorin area till December 2.
Between December 3 and 7, the weather in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry is likely to be same: “Light to moderate rain at a few places with thunderstorm and lightning at one or two places is likely to occur over Tamil Nadu and over Puducherry and Karaikal area.”
The capital city of Tamil Nadu is bearing the brunt of heavy rain. Heavy rain is still lashing the city causing waterlogging in many areas. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 28°C-29°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to be 24°C-25°C.
