Days after Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) coordinator Seeman triggered a political row in Tamil Nadu after attacking Muslims and Christians for “supporting” the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its ally Congress, he said Thursday they cannot be called minorities just based on their religion.

On July 30, during a protest organised by his party condemning the violence in Manipur, Seeman was heard saying that “it is only us who think that those who have embraced Christianity and Islam are children of God”, but it has been many years since they had “turned into children of Satan”.

He had said Christians and Muslims should take responsibility for all the “injustices” happening in Tamil Nadu as they had been voting continuously for the DMK and the Congress, who had done “no good for them”.

“Unbearable corruption, inefficient administration… they (Christians and Muslims) are the reason for this,” Seeman had said.

On Thursday, while addressing reporters in Chennai, Seeman said Christians and Muslims are Tamils. “If you keep calling them minorities, I will hit you with sandals,” he threatened.

He said people can change their religion but not their language or race, and. Across the world, the census count is taken based on language and race and not based on religion or caste, he added.

He was responding to a question on why he was blaming the minorities, who constitute only 18 per cent of the population in Tamil Nadu, for poll results even as the majority’s votes decide the outcome.

The Tamil Nadu Platform for People’s Unity (TNPPU), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi have since then condemned Seeman’s statements and urged him to apologise.

Seeman has, however, refused to change his stance and said Thursday he was ready to disband his party and leave politics if anyone said one good thing the DMK had done for the welfare of Christians and Muslims.

He said he was speaking not for votes but for the nation and asked how Christians and Muslims can endure the injustice committed by parties such as the DMK, Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), and the Congress, which have ruled Tamil Nadu all these years.
