Indian Union Muslim League’s politics, with Malayali characteristics, has created a language for articulating the legitimate demands of a religious minority without alienating other segments of society.
Razak, who contested as an Independent backed by the CPI(M), had trumped MA Razak Master, a candidate of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), by just 573 votes in Koduvally in the 2016 Assembly elections.
In the results declared today, IUML’s K N A Khader polled 65,227 votes and defeated CPI(M)’s P P Basheer by 23,310 votes. In the 2016 Assembly elections, the then party candidate, P K Kunhalikutty, had polled 72,181 votes and won with a margin of 38,057 votes.
Vengara constituency in Malappuram district of Kerala, is considered a stronghold of the IUML and has a Muslim-majority population of over 48,000 people. IUML's prime contender will be the CPM candidate, while the BJP might finish a distant third.
