When India won the match against Pakistan, the air was filled with the sound of firecrackers and it was Diwali all over again. About 3,000 students from Panjab University started the victory procession on bikes, cars and cycles, taking frequent breaks to dance and sing.

The roads were jammed with people cheering for India and waving the tri-colour. As motorbikes zipped across the city, hooting and honking in delight, dholwalas swung into action and drummed out victory songs. Cars lined up with children dancing on the bonnets and playing Punjabi music at high decibels. While a cake was cut at the Students’ Centre in Panjab University,in Chitkara School of Mass Communication fans captured the celebrations with a camera.

In every sector, people took to the roads and danced till wee hours of the morning, bringing traffic to a halt and keeping the police on their toes. The cops didn’t play spoilsport though — they were shaking hands with people, gently persuading them to get back to their homes at 1.30 am. The Sector 22 road, adjacent to Aroma Hotel, was cordoned off due to traffic jam,as were the roads in Sectors 8,9,10,11 and 17,and prime locations like The Taj Hotel,Hotel Shivalik View and Bus Stand Road. Buzz has it that gunshots,in salutation, were fired. In Sector 35,people dressed in blue jerseys climbed the sector roundabout and got pictures clicked. The mood was exuberant with bhangra victory dances and distribution of sweets. DJs playing at private parties turned up the volume and residents joined in. Despite the buoyance, there were no reports of hooliganism.
