More than a knack,Jaspal Bhatti has a nose, one that sniffs out stories from the dead corners; a nose that loves to poke around and mind someone elses business a prime occupation and pre-occupation that Bhatti has been indulging in with dogged persistance for many years now. His audio-visual spoofs have spared no one from pesky property dealers,file-pushing sarkari babus, bribe taking officials to sickening adulteration, punching inflation and frustrating politicians. The latest to be caught is the electricity board. On October 26,P&R Films and Bhattis Mad Arts are releasing Punjabi comedy,Power Cut. With it are debuting three city-based actors Zafar Khan,Surilie Gautam and Jasraj Bhatti.
Electricity board is such a dry subject. The state of power supply is pathetic in Punjab. Summers have power cuts as long as 18 hours. NRIs crack jokes on the power situation here. It is such a subject that a documentary would do more justice to the gravity of the situation. And that is a challenge for me as a writer and director of this comedy, says Jaspal, who took six months to come up with a light-hearted yet impactful script.
What happens when you have a hero who is called Current and his leading lady called Bijli in a state that is suffering from power cuts? Well, that is the films premise, says Jaspal. The film has him and Jaswinder Bhalla as the village jesters at the receiving end of the power cut. Along with them is Prem Chopra as the Power Minister and Rajesh Puri as the power coporationg CMD. There are undercurrents of how power is misused by politicians, people and by the electricity board, says Jaspal who, interestingly, has worked for ten years with Punjab State Electricity Board as an executive Engineer and knows the department inside out.
The film also sees actress Yami Gautams sister,Surilie, making a debut along with Zafar Khan,a Mad Arts school product. We are cashing in on the Khan surname, laughs Savita Bhatti,CEO,Mad Arts, who, along with the films team, carried lanterns to the press conference held at Golf Club in Sector 6. An electrifying love story is how Jasraj describes the film. Apart from acting,Bhatti junior is also the associate director for the film and has lent a hand to editing, marketing, designing and promotion of the film. With music given by Gurmeet Singh, its also the the films boliyan that we will be tuning into.
