A 32-year-old man who allegedly set his wife on fire in front of their two children earlier this week after suspecting her of having an affair has been arrested in Hyderabad’s Nallakunta.

Hyderabad East Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police J Narasiah told The Indian Express that K Venkateshwarlu, a driver, set his wife Triveni ablaze while she was asleep at night, and that the couple’s children, who were sleeping nearby, raised the alarm. He said tensions arising from the husband’s suspicions of his wife appeared to be behind the killing.

“Venkateshwarlu began to suspect that his wife Triveni was having an affair and that caused frequent fights between them,” he said. “Her family members, who tried to mediate, said that she denied all his accusations.”

The couple, originally from Huzurnagar in Telangana’s Suryapet district, had married secretly in 2014 and later moved to Hyderabad. Police said a neighbour’s report that the victim was dropped home by a youth when she went job hunting allegedly fuelled the suspect’s suspicions, though his allegations were later found to be unfounded.
