A woman was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and ramming the car into a police barricade leading to hitting a constable on duty at a picket post in Rohini’s Sector 11, police said on Friday.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night near Punjab Sweets in the Shahbad Dairy area of Outer North Delhi, officers said. The case came to light after police received a call informing that a car had hit an officer deployed at a picket and that the woman driver appeared to be in a heavily inebriated state and had refused to step out of the vehicle.
A police team reached the spot and found a white car that had rammed into the police barricade. The driver, identified as Arti Jain (40), a resident of Sector 16, Rohini, was found seated inside the car. On inquiry, she was found to be under the influence of alcohol, police said.
The injured officer, Constable Rohit of the 1st Battalion, Delhi Armed Police, had already been shifted to BSA Hospital in Rohini for treatment, they added.
During the probe, police learned that Jain, who is employed in a private firm, was returning home after attending a birthday party when the accident occured. She was arrested and the offending vehicle was seized, police said.
An FIR under sections 281 (rash driving) and 125a (causing hurt by act endangering life) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at Shahbad Dairy police station. Further investigation is underway.
