A 48-year old man died by suicide by jumping in front of a moving train in East Delhi’s Shahdara area on Thursday, after being chased by officers for allegedly strangling his wife to death, the police said.
According to the police, the deceased, Kulwant Singh and his wife Mahendra Kaur, got into an argument at their Kasturba Nagar house after he asked her to give Rs 20 on Wednesday morning.
“Enraged by Kaur’s response, he strangled her on the roof of their house, and took the body inside. His son Shivcharan was at the house when the police arrived,” a police officer said. Shivcharan told police that his mother had died by suicide, the officer added.
However, noticing the strangulation marks on the woman’s neck, police suspected foul play. Soon, the search for the missing Singh commenced.
When the police tracked Singh down, he was found sitting on the tracks and started running after noticing the officers approaching him.
“In order to avoid arrest, he jumped in front of a moving train. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead,” a police officer said.
Kaur, the police said, lived with her husband, two sons and a daughter.
