While Rock On!! got her the attention of the public,writer-director Sudhir Mishra first noticed Shahana Goswami after watching her in Yun Hota To Kya Hota. Her brief appearance in the Naseeruddin Shah-directed film led Mishra to consider her for a role in Tera Kya Hoga Johny. It took me by surprise, but who doesnt want to work with Sudhir, says Goswami, waiting for the release of the film on December 17.
Narrated through the eyes of a16-year-old boy who sells tea,the movie, set in Mumbai, has Goswami playing a dutiful wife and a passionate lover. Things get messy for her character Divya when is cornered. Working with Sudhir is an experience. Unlike a lot of directors,he is in this space of constant creation. There is magic on the sets and he brings in a lot of energy, adds Goswami, who essays the role of Neil Nitin Mukeshs lover in the film, while her husband is a cop. She adds,One cannot make a film with two characters. You need the layering,sub-text and characters to make it memorable.
When questioned about the rising sexual consciousness portrayed in films, the actor states that it was always a part of society. Infidelity,extra-marital affairs and homosexuality have existed since long, the only difference is that we have now started talking about it, states Goswami, adding,As an actor,I want to do everything. It is challenging to do both commercial and art-house cinema. You have to work hard… it is not easy being Munni or Sheila,or looking glamourous all the time.
Known for her character-driven choice of roles,Goswami does not mind dancing around the trees or being the leading lady and do a Sheila-esque sizzling item number. I have been stereotyped because of my releases, from offbeat to serious, including Firaaq. I want to change that notion, says Goswami, who will be seen in two biggies: a thriller, mystery, titled Game, starring Abhishek Bachchan,Jimmy Sheirgill,Kangana Ranaut and Anupam Kher, and Shah Rukhs Ra One,which will see her in the role of a game designer. Working with Shah Rukh has taught me two very valuable lessons: focus and commitment, says Goswami.
