A day after Newsline reported on students alleging discrimination in the merit calculation for BCom aspirants,Panjab University changed its decision and now students from all education boards are being treated at par. Centralised admission for the BCom course has been introduced for the first time this year and the entire process is being handled by the university. While calculating merit, however, students from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had to submit the average marks of five subjects while those passing out from the ICSE and state boards had to calculate their percentage for all six subjects.

On Friday,Vice-Chancellor Professor R C Sobti took serious note of the matter and directed those involved in the admission process to correct the mistake.

The first merit list was displayed late on Friday because of the change in calculation of merit. Speaking to Newsline,Professor Karamjit Singh, who is heading the admission procedure, said,“We have been directed to change the merit calculation procedure and now merit for students from other boards would be calculated on the basis of five subjects and not six.” The decision came as a relief to many students who, under the earlier system of merit calculation, might have lost their chance to get admission in city colleges.
