When Delhi-based Rameshwar Broota picks up the camera,it isn’t only to report on reality. He recasts his images with care, digitally manipulating these to make a complex and quirky statement. This End to the Other, his latest collection of images, takes this style even further. The collection includes an image of his wife asleep on her stomach while above her,in place of walls in the room,a jet takes off in the cloudy night sky. Yet another untitled work is sharply divided into two; the white crop of hair on an old mans head is matched by a row of trees, whose leaves are blowing away in the wind. From nature to the landscape of Haridwar,Broota has focused on a range of subjects, but gives each image his own digital signature. This End to the Other will be showcased at Vadehra Art Gallery in Delhi and Aakriti Art Gallery in Kolkata.
Note Worthy
Often referred to as the queen of khayal and hailed as one of the finest female Hindustani classical musicians of our times, legendary vocalist Kishori Amonkar has been selected for the Sumitra Charat Ram Award for Lifetime Achievement 2011. Known as much for her temperament and whimsical behaviour on stage as for her flawless notes in complex musical patterns (the trademark of her gharana),Amonkar has dealt with much criticism in the past and has lived most of her life as a recluse. A torchbearer of the Jaipur Atrauli gharana,80-year-old Amonkar will receive the award, initiated by Delhi’s prestigious arts organisation,Shri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, next week.
