Even as the year-long celebrations to mark 50 golden years of the regions premier tertiary care institute have just been kickstarted today, the PGI authorities are already chalking out the road map ahead for the institute. The institute will soon make it possible to perform the most complicated and intricate surgeries with the precision of a robot.
As of now, surgeries are performed in two ways – either the conventional way or the laparoscopic way which is known as minimum invasive surgery. However, with the introduction of robotic surgery,it will be possible for a surgeon to use robotic technology during an operation.
For the purpose, the PGI Department of General Surgery has already made a proposal mentioning the equipment and machines that would be needed and also the training programme that the surgeons must undergo in order to be able to perform state-of-the-art robotic surgery.
PGI Director Dr Y K Chawla, said,We are planning to introduce various state-of-the-art advanced technologies in health care. These include the introduction of robotic surgery, taking stem cell research to the next level, setting up of state-of-the-art metabolic and genetic laboratories and multi-organ transplant facilities.
As of now, robotic surgeries are increasingly being performed at high-end corporate hospitals in metros like Delhi ,Mumbai,Chennai etc. In fact, there are very few public sector hospitals which offer robotic surgeries, one of them being AIIMS,New Delhi, where the first robotic surgery in urology was performed in April 2010.
A senior faculty member of the institute said,Once robotic surgery is introduced,it will take the level of patient and health care facilities in PGIMER several notches higher.
In 2011-2012 a total 1,25,000 surgeries were performed in various departments of the institute.
