Samarth Janve believes music is all-encompassing and as an art form has a reach that breaks many barriers. That’s precisely why the 28-year-old classical vocalist is always eager to look for new ways to compose music and sing too. Janve is in Chandigarh for a concert organised by North Zone Cultural Centre at Kalagram on Saturday evening and promises to enthrall the audience with a performance that will include raags, bhajans, thumri and some meditational singing.

Learning classical vocal music since the age of 10 and having won many state-level competitions, awards and scholarships,Janve performs all over the country and works extensively in the field of theatre, composing music for plays. These days, the young vocalist is also working on music for animation films, the first being Nilu-Pilu-Dhilu,produced by the organisation Chinnha. “Yes,I do a wide repertory of work,as it gives me a chance to experience, explore and in the process learn so much. Every day is new and it all adds value to my work,” says Janve, who has composed music for Tagore’s Bipode More Roakha Koro, for a dance presentation by Ability Unlimited Foundation. “Each aspect of work has its own challenges, with live performances giving you a different high. But I strongly feel that if you have learnt classical music, then it’s really easy to adapt to other genres of music,as you have a strong base,” says Janve, adding that his parents, who are artistes themselves, have inspired and encouraged him to devote himself to music. At present,Janve is taking tutelage from Pandit Jasraj. He believes that learning music is a life-long process. “There are so many intricacies that you can never claim to have learnt it all,” says he.

Janve will perform at Kalagram on Saturday evening at 6.30 pm.

Entry is free.
