Monkey menace: PU hostellers fear even stepping out of rooms

On a daily basis, scores of monkeys visit hostels, especially hostel number 4,5,6 and 7.

Monkey menace at Panjab University (PU) is giving a tough time to hostel residents and students studying at University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) and pharmaceutical department. With no means to control them,it has become an uphill battle for students to take care of themselves.

On a daily basis, scores of monkeys visit hostels, especially hostel number 4,5,6 and 7. Sometimes these simians are also seen around the School of Communication Studies. In the hostels, monkeys are usually seen sleeping in corridors, making it tough for students to move out of their rooms.

Recently,a monkey had attacked a girl student and snatched her hand bag. “I woke up at 5am and found a monkey sleeping outside my room. I closed the room and waited till 7 am for it to go,so that I could step out of my room. The monkeys often take away the mugs kept outside our rooms,” said Mukesh,a resident of hostel number 4.

Adding to it,hostel number 5 resident Siddarth said that students fear putting out their clothes to dry in the balconies,as monkeys tear them or throw them away. The authorities should pay utmost importance to the issue,he added.

Earlier, the university had a langoor owner, but after the UT Administration directed that no one was authorised to keep langoors,as they came under protected species, the university discontinued the services of the langoor owner.

“We discontinued the services being offered by the langoor owner, after the directions of the UT Administration. Monkeys are posing a great threat to the students. As a senator and warden,I wanted that either the administration should review its decision or ensure the safety of the students,” said Yog Raj Angrish, warden of hostel number 7.

Angrish added that every day they got complaints from students and that they were planning to hold a meeting soon to find out ways to resolve the issue.
