Mingled Music

Like every Indian teenager living in Canada and the UK,I went through a phase of utter confusion.

Identity Crisis
Like every Indian teenager living in Canada and the UK,I went through a phase of utter confusion. Here I was— an Indian sitting with a group of white boys who didn’t understand the music I listened to or why my food smelled different. I couldn’t decide if I should behave white or Indian. It took me a while to enjoy this confusion and realise that I don’t have to take sides. Which is why at one end my album’s got a complete track in English called My Kinda Girl, featuring US rapper Redman, and then it has the typical Indian flavour in a Hindi song,Humrahee.

Personal Music Choice
Right now I’m on a major disco hangover. I’vebeen listening to Dancing Machine by Michael Jackson and have mastered the robot dance. I love watching grand musicals in the theatres in London and listening to their brilliant music as well. I’m a major RD Burman and AR Rahman fan.

Inspiration
Everything around me. People, relationships, good music, they all inspire me. I meet anybody and could write a song about them immediately, depending on what I have shared during that time. I don’t sit around looking for inspiration,my songs and music just come to me. Then I sit down and fine-tune them slowly.

Piracy
My last album sold 1.3 million copies. Without the massive piracy it would have probably sold 10 million copies. While it hurts financially,I’m not complaining because it gave me a whole new level of popularity. I had packed houses for my shows in Australia,Japan and Africa. These are places where my music wasn’t even released,it reached the crowds through piracy and they loved it. While I still condemn piracy,I can’t hate something that had given me so much popularity all over the world.

Next Step
I’m nearly ready with my next album. It should be out in around six months. For the last three years I’ve been working on both these two albums. Identity is more like the music I am known for and what my fans love me for. This way, they won’t complain when my next album comes out, which is a total change. It’s nothing like what I’ve been doing all this while. When you listen to it you’ll wonder if this is the same Raghav who sang Angel Eyes.
