Who is Justice (Retd) Nawab Singh who heads the SC-appointed committee to resolve grievances of protesting farmers?
Hailing from an agricultural background, Justice Nawab Singh is considered to be well-versed in the issues that farmers face on the ground.

In September 2024, the Supreme Court constituted a committee headed by former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Justice (Retd) Nawab Singh to amicably resolve the grievances of protesting farmers at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders. The bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan directed the committee to hold meetings with the farmers. One such meeting which was scheduled to take place in Haryana’s Panchkula on Friday has been cancelled after the farmers refused to attend it.
Who is Justice (Retd) Nawab Singh?
Born on December 11, 1951 in a family of farmers and lawyers, Justice (Retd) Nawab Singh completed his law graduation from Kurukshetra University in 1974. Hailing from an agricultural background, he is considered to be well-versed in the issues that farmers face on the ground.
During a press conference at the Chandigarh Press Club in April 2024, Justice Singh strongly advocated a new capital and a separate high court for Haryana. “The demand…is absolutely justified and the state government will have to pay attention to this on a priority basis,” he had said.
After retiring from the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2013, he was appointed president of the Haryana Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, the apex body to decide cases pertaining to the state’s consumer disputes.
In his initial years, Singh worked as a lawyer in Haryana’s Ambala district before he was selected to the state’s Superior Judicial Services in 1984 as additional district and sessions judge. In 1999, he was promoted as district and sessions judge and served in various districts. He was also registrar (vigilance) of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Before his elevation as a high court judge in April 2007, Justice Singh also served as the registrar general of the high court. During his stint as a high court judge, he served as a member of various committees, including the building committee, juvenile justice monitoring committee, Board of Governors’ Judicial Academy Chandigarh and the committee for recruitment to superior judicial services. His father, a prominent landlord, practiced as an eminent lawyer in Haryana.
Besides Justice Nawab Singh, the committee formed to hold talks with the farmers includes retired IPS officer and former Haryana DGP P S Sandhu; Dr Devinder Sharma; Ranjit Singh Ghumman, Professor of Eminence at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar; Agricultural Economist from Punjab Agriculture University Dr Sukhpal Singh; and Professor B R Kambhoj, Vice Chancellor of Chaudhary Charan Singh Agriculture University, Hisar as special invitee.
Protesting farmers at Shambu and Khanauri on the Punjab-Haryana border are currently preparing to mark a year of their stir seeking the implementation of 14 demands, including a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price (MSP).
